Lonely but not alone

By Romina Afghan

If you’re lonely, then you’re not alone.  How ironic.

There are scores of people feeling lonely, isolated and alone right now.  It seems that as the ways we can connect increase and multiply, the real connections we have actually seem to dilute,  and leave us more alone than ever.

Loneliness is the silent epidemic, the label no one wants to claim.
But if you’re lonely, you don’t have to be ashamed, to add insult on top of the injury of loneliness. It’s not your fault, you haven’t done anything wrong, and there isn’t something fundamentally wrong with you.

But, there are things you can do.

If you’re lonely, reach out- to Allaah, your Rabb; your “Waliyy” -Protector, Guardian, Supporter, Friend. The One who is closer to you by His Knowledge than your own jugular vein in your neck- and then reach out to people.
If you’re lonely, remind yourself that you are loved. Loved by Allaah, and by those He sent in your life. Loved so much that He has prepared for you delights that no eye has ever seen and no mind can ever fully comprehend, and He Guides you and Nurtures you to perfection so you can reach it.

If you’re lonely, remind yourself that being a “stranger” ( one of the ghurabaa’, in Arabic) is rewarded with Tooba in Paradise, and one dip in Paradise is enough to make a person  forget any and every difficulty they ever faced in this world.

If you’re lonely, know that your loneliness has a purpose because your Lord did not create anything without a purpose; and once you have discovered what you need to learn and grow from this experience, the bitterness will dissipate and a sweetness that emanates from the heart will fill you. The light at the end of the proverbial tunnel will engulf you.

” Allaah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His light is like a niche within which is a lamp, the lamp is within glass, the glass as if it were a pearly [white] star lit from [the oil of] a blessed olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire. Light upon light. Allah guides to His light whom He wills. And Allah presents examples for the people, and Allah is Knowing of all things ” ( Qur’an Surah Noor 24:35).

The Light is there for anyone who feels the darkness of loneliness encroaching them. Reach out and light up your heart. Connect it to the source of light by praying, supplicating, asking, crying, pleading with your head upon the ground and knowing that every whisper and every tear will bring you closer and closer to the contentment and peace you seek.

Then reach out to your friends and loved ones.

If you’re lonely, your sisters don’t want to be happy knowing they are ok,  but their sister is not.

If you’re lonely, get in touch. People have an immense amount of love for you. People don’t know. They think you’re ok. They have been made and kept busy,  and think the reason that you’re not in touch is the same; that you are also busy. Yes, this loneliness is testing you, but in this test of life, none of us can pass alone. We are not required to. In fact, the opposite is true.   We are obligated to “enjoin one another to truth and to enjoin one another to patience” (Quraan, Surah al-Asr).

If you’re lonely,  let others help. Their jannah may depend on it.

Salaam I am alone, and the loneliness does depress me. I don’t feel strong to know my allah is with me. I used to have friends, family, a partner but now I don’t and I can’t accept being on my own. I fear I will be alone forever, through wrong doings of my own and it scares me. I am trying to be patient and strong but sometimes I just feel I am wasting my life and I can’t appreciate anything. When in fact I have a lot to be grateful for. I’ve messed up my life and now I’m… Read more »
