Contemplating the significance of the Day of Ashura is an enriching experience that deepens our faith and connection to Allah (SWT), and gives us a moment to renew our niyyah and our commitment to our faith.

Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram in the Islamic calendar, holds profound importance for Muslims worldwide.
The Day of Ashura is known for its fasting, which is highly recommended. The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said, “The best fast after Ramadan is the month of Allah (SWT), Muharram, and the best day to fast is Ashura”, (Sahih Muslim). This day serves as an opportunity to reflect on our actions, seek forgiveness, and draw closer to Allah(SWT).

On this day, we all remember the parting of the Red Sea, allowing the Prophet Musa (AS) and the Children of Israel to escape Pharaoh.
The Qur’an states, “And We parted the sea for them, so they crossed over, and We saved Musa (AS) and those with him” (Qur’an, 26:63). This event symbolises the triumph of faith and perseverance against oppression.

As we approach Ashura, it is essential to use this day as a chance to reaffirm our faith. Here are some practical ways to do so.

1. Fasting: Engage in fasting on Ashura. This act of devotion not only brings spiritual rewards but also helps us empathise with those who face hardship. The Prophet (pbuh) recommended fasting on the 9th and 10th of Muharram, stating, “If I live until next year, I will fast on the ninth” (Sahih Muslim). Ibn Abbas reported: “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came to Medina and he found the Jews fasting on the day of Ashura.” The Prophet said, “What is this day you are fasting?” They said, “This is a great day in which Allah saved Moses and his people, and he drowned Pharaoh and his people. Moses fasted on it due to gratitude, so we also fast on it.” The Prophet said, “We are more worthy and closer to Moses than you.” The Prophet fasted the day of Ashura and he commanded fasting on it. (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 2004, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1130).

2. Prayer and Reflection: Spend time in prayer, reciting the Quran, and reflecting on its teachings. As Allah (SWT) says, “Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding” (Surah Al-Imran, 3:190).

3. Acts of Charity: Engage in charitable acts. it has been reported from the Companion Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said, “Whoever fasts on the 10th of Muharram (Ashura), it is as though he has fasted the entire year. And whoever gives charity on this day, it is like the charity of an entire year.” (Recorded by Imam Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali in his Lata’if al-Ma’ariffrom Abu Musa al-Madini) The Prophet (pbuh) emphasised the importance of helping others, saying, “The best among you are those who have the best manners and character” (Sahih Bukhari). Use this day to feed the needy or support a charitable cause such as Solace, supporting revert women past the shahadah.

4. Community Involvement: Take part in community gatherings or educational sessions that discuss the significance of Ashura. Sharing knowledge and experiences can strengthen our bonds and enhance our understanding of our faith. Mu’adh ibn Anas reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever imparts knowledge will have the reward of whoever acted upon it, without detracting from the reward of one who acted.” (Sunan Ibn Mājah 240)

5. Seeking Forgiveness: Use this day to seek forgiveness from Allah (SWT) for any shortcomings. The Quran reminds us, “And seek forgiveness of your Lord and repent to Him” (Qur’an, 11:3). This can be a powerful moment to renew your commitment to your faith and personal growth.

Conclusion

Let us make the most of The Day of Ashura by increasing in worship and drawing closer to Allah (SWT). May He accept our prayers, duas and good deeds on this blessed day. Ameen.
