Solace Helps Revert Women Move from Financial Hardship to Financial Independence

Solace is delighted to celebrate the successful completion of its Debt Relief and Financial Empowerment Programme, delivered with the support of an anonymous grant provider.

The programme was created to support revert Muslim women experiencing financial hardship by providing immediate financial relief alongside practical tools for long-term financial independence. Through a unique combination of debt repayment support, financial literacy training, business development, mentoring, and micro-grants, participants were empowered to build brighter and more sustainable futures for themselves and their families.

Over the course of the programme, Solace received 163 applications from women seeking support. Following a robust assessment process, 21 women were selected to participate and received tailored debt relief and financial empowerment support.

More than £63,000 zakat was distributed to help participants reduce or clear priority debts, easing financial pressures and allowing them to focus on rebuilding their confidence and stability. For many participants, the debt relief represented far more than financial assistance, it provided hope, relief, and the opportunity to move forward without the burden of overwhelming debt.

Alongside debt support, participants completed a Financial Literacy Programme covering budgeting, debt management, financial planning, and responsible money management. The impact of the training was clear, with participants reporting significant increases in financial confidence and understanding. Confidence in planning for the future increased by 62.8%, while understanding of interest rates and borrowing costs increased by 57.1%. Participants rated their overall financial knowledge at an impressive 4.78 out of 5 following completion of the course.

Building on this foundation, ten revert women progressed to the Business Empowerment Programme, where they received specialist training, mentoring, and support to transform business ideas into practical ventures. Participants developed business plans, conducted market research, refined their financial forecasts, and pitched their ideas to a panel of judges.

Reflecting on the journey from the Financial Literacy Programme through to the Business Empowerment Programme, our course facilitator shared:

“It has been an absolute pleasure to facilitate both the Financial Literacy and Business Empowerment programmes for Solace. Over the course of the training, I had the privilege of working with an inspiring group of Muslim revert women who demonstrated remarkable tenacity, creativity and courage. Many began the programme with a dream of starting their own business but doubted whether it was truly possible for them. Watching their confidence grow as they developed business ideas, refined them into viable ventures and ultimately pitched for grant funding has been incredibly rewarding. What impressed me most was not only their willingness to step outside their comfort zones, but also the strong sense of sisterhood that developed amongst the group, with participants consistently encouraging and supporting one another. These women are now building businesses rooted in their own lived experiences as reverts, creating products and services that serve people like them while working towards greater financial independence for themselves and their families. Some have already begun generating revenue, and I have no doubt that their businesses will continue to create meaningful impact within their communities and the wider Ummah.”

As a result, £10,000 in micro-grants was awarded to support a diverse range of businesses, including modest fashion, children’s publishing, greeting cards, jewellery, community savings initiatives, and ethical retail products. For many participants, this marked the first step towards self-employment and long-term financial independence.

One participant reflected:

“The Financial Empowerment Programme has had a powerful and lasting impact on both my personal and professional development. It shifted my mindset from surviving financially to thinking strategically and long term. Being awarded the start-up grant was not just financial support—it was validation that what I am building matters.”

Another beneficiary shared:

“Receiving debt relief from Solace was a huge weight lifted from my shoulders. The programme has given me the confidence, knowledge, and support to start my own business and look towards the future with optimism.”

This programme demonstrates the power of combining immediate financial support with education, mentoring, and enterprise development. By addressing both short-term financial hardship and long-term economic resilience, participants have been equipped with the skills, confidence, and opportunities needed to create lasting change in their lives.

Solace extends its heartfelt thanks to our funders for making this transformative programme possible. Together, we are helping revert Muslim women move from financial hardship towards financial independence, dignity, and hope.
